Shannon Airport is temporarily closed "due to unexpected heavy fog conditions".

In a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday, the airport said: "Due to unexpected heavy fog conditions during a period of essential taxiway maintenance work, Shannon Airport remains temporarily closed.

"As a result, flights in and out of Shannon Airport may be cancelled or delayed this morning, Monday 9th Oct."

Passengers have been advised to check their flight status directly with the airline in advance of travelling to the airport. The runway is expected to re-open later this morning once fog clears.

“We will continue to update passengers across our social media channels," a spokesperson said.

Since 11pm on Sunday night, nine arrival flights into Shannon Airport have been cancelled.

They include seven Ryanair flights from Manchester, Fuerteventura, London Stansted, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Malta and Porta, and two Aer Lingus flights from New York and Boston.

So far on Monday, two Aer Lingus flights from Shannon to London Heathrow have also been cancelled.

Four flights due to arrive at the airport on Monday morning have also been delayed.

They include a United Airlines flight from Newark, and Ryanair flights from Beziers, London Stansted and London Gatwick.

Three departing flights have also been delayed – two Ryanair flights to London Stansted and London Gatwick and also a United Airlines flight to Newark.

Met Éireann has said there will be "mist and fog in many areas this morning" but it will "gradually clear with hazy sunshine developing".

However, it will stay misty in some coastal areas throughout the day, the forecaster added.
