Woman (50s) killed in Galway assault remembered as a 'good soul'
A Galway woman who died followed an alleged assault has been remembered as a “good soul”.
Sharon Naughton (55), from Loughbaun, Aughrim, Ballinasloe, died from injuries sustained during an incident at her home on Monday night.
The mother of five was rushed to Portiuncula Hospital where her condition deteriorated.
On Thursday, her husband, Owen Naughton, appeared in court charged with assault causing harm to his wife.
The couple, who have five children, were well known in Ballinasloe and the tragedy has shocked the community.
A former neighbour of Ms Naughton’s described her as “a good soul” and “a character”.
“I knew her from when she was a child and I know she brought a lot of joy to her parents’ lives. They were wonderful people,” they said. “Sharon would have been well known and what has happened is just absolutely heartbreaking.
“They have a beautiful family and everyone is very sad for them all.
“There is an awful gloom over the town. Everybody is talking about it and the timing just could not be worse with Christmas on the way. Let God comfort them all.”
Ms Naughton had previously worked for Bank of Ireland in Ballinasloe.
On Thursday Owen Naughton, of Loughbaun, Aughrim, Ballinasloe, was brought before Ballinasloe District Court and formally charged with assaulting his wife and causing her harm.
Mr Naughton made no reply when the charge was put to him.
Gardaí objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the charge.
Judge Deirdre Geraghty refused bail and remanded Mr Naughton in custody.
