The film which is adapted from Irish author Claire Keegan's award-winning book, is Cillian Murphy's first project since his Oppenheimer Oscar glory and is already getting rave reviews and it's easy to see why from the first look clip.

Cillian stars as a family man and coal merchant Bill who makes a startling discovery while making a delivery in the weeks before Christmas in 1985.

While dropping off a load to the local nuns he finds a young terrified girl who had been locked in there all night and pleads with him to help her.

She tells him her name is Sarah, like his mother's, who fell pregnant with him as a teen but was taken in by a local family as a housekeeper sparing her from the Magdelene Laundry as he is repeatedly reminded of and told to be grateful.

Bill becomes haunted by the young girl and her symmetry with his own past but the closer he comes to trying to help the more his world is jeopardised.

The trailer starts out with the disturbing sight of Sarah desperately begging Bill to get her out as he apologises for not being able to help.

'She came up to me and she asked me to get her out,' he recounts to his wife Eileen. 'You'd want to watch what you'd say about what's there,' she informs him.

The clip cuts to Sister Mary (Eileen Watson) warning him off wandering around the convent.

From there the warnings become more severe, we hear how the nuns have a finger in every pie' and that his exposing what was happening behind convent walls could be denying his children an education.

Another tense exchange shows Sister Mary slide an envelope across the table which she is sure Eileen would appreciate.

The trailer wraps up with a tormented Bill asking his wife 'What if it was one of our girls?' as she replies 'They're not our girls... if you want to to get on in this life, there are things you have to ignore.'
