After a long winter sports season, Durango High School student-athletes are starting to see the sun again with spring sports underway.

Baseball, girls lacrosse and girls soccer each started their seasons with multiple weekend games.

After winning his first game on Friday as Durango baseball’s head coach, Austin Anderson got another win under his belt with a 14-1 win over Page High School at Aztec High School on Saturday afternoon. The Demons improved to 2-0 on the season.

Junior Jack Englund had a great day to lead the Demons. He went 4-4 hitting and scored two runs, and hit a home run along with four RBIs. Sophomore Dawson Mclnnes also had three hits and scored two runs as well. Sophomore Austin Romero also had two runs and a hit which was a home run.

Senior Ian Szura pitched five innings and had nine strikeouts and only allowed one hit.

The Demons had a good first inning and led 2-0. After a scoreless second inning, the Demons scored a run in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead into the fifth. That’s when Durango exploded for 10 runs and Page had one and the Demons ended the game up 14-1 after the fifth.

Durango played Aztec on Saturday afternoon but results were unavailable at the time of writing.

Girls Soccer:

The Demons girls soccer team didn’t get off to the best start and lost 3-0 to Cherry Creek on Friday and tied Ralston Valley on 1-1 on Saturday to start off their season 0-1-1.

Against Cherry Creek, the Demons got down 2-0 at half and then Cherry Creek scored a goal in the second half to finish off Durango.

Sophomore goalie Ryne Neiman finished the game with 14 saves for the Demons.

On Saturday, Ralston Valley scored first and took a 1-0 halftime lead. However, senior Sarah Somrak scored a goal in the second half which was assisted by senior Carter Neiman to tie the game. Ryne Neiman finished the game with 20 saves.

The Demons are back in action next Thursday at Legend.
