The Kansas City Chiefs clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas.
Patrick Mahomes completed 29 of 38 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns for the Chiefs. Kansas City’s 19-point margin of victory was their best of the season.
Russell Wilson, on the other hand, completed only 23 of 37 passes for 205 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
The Chiefs dominated most of the action. Each of their first two possessions were long drives that resulted in touchdowns.
Meanwhile, the Steelers’ first two drives combined to pick up only one yard across eight plays. Kansas City raced out to a 13-0 lead before Pittsburgh finally got on board in the second quarter.
The teams traded field goals to start the second half before the Chiefs scored two straight touchdowns, one that was set up by a Pat Freiermuth fumble.
The win was a change of pace for Kansas City, which has often played in one-possession games this season. On Christmas, the Chiefs were never really threatened by a Steelers offense that couldn’t move the ball consistently through the air.
In addition to a lack of big plays passing, Wilson was also sacked five times. Pittsburgh did have some success rushing, however, gaining 202 yards on 31 carries.
At 15-1, Kansas City is guaranteed home field throughout the playoffs. The Chiefs will now have the option of resting key players in the final week of the season. Mahomes sprained his ankle in Week 16, while defensive tackle Chris Jones missed Wednesday’s game.
Kansas City’s next game is against the Denver Broncos.
The Steelers are now 10-6 after their three-game slide. Their final game of the season is against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The penalty bailed out some curious play-calling by the Steelers, who opted to run on 3rd-and-a-long-3 a play before the penalty.
The Chiefs appeared to pick up a 4th-and-1 but a holding penalty moved them back 10 yards. The flag was a double whammy — not only did Kansas City lose a first down, but the 10 yards also moved the team out of field goal range.
That’s a big stop for the Steelers, who will takeover after a touchback on the punt with a chance to take the lead.
The Steelers are finally on the board after an 11-play, 72-yard drive that ended with a Russell Wilson scramble and dive into the end zone.
That was by far Pittsburgh’s best possession of the game, but the Chiefs still lead 13-7.
No harm done after the Russell Wilson interception, as the Steelers defense held the Chiefs to a three-and-out and forced Kansas City’s first punt of the game.
A Patrick Mahomes pass was tipped up in the air on third down, but nobody on Pittsburgh could come up with the interception. Wilson and the offense instead take over on their own 28.

One play after a Steelers touchdown was wiped out because of a holding penalty, Russell Wilson threw into triple coverage in the end zone and was picked off.
Justin Reid came up with the interception for the Chiefs, who will take over on their own 20 with a 13-0 lead.

Big news for Pittsburgh: Star wide receiver George Pickens, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, will play on Christmas against the Chiefs.
Pickens, the No. 1 wideout, has 55 receptions for 850 yards and 3 touchdowns this season.
The Steelers will win the AFC North by winning their final two games (they haven’t won division since 2020).
Pittsburgh has lost two straight games for the first time since Week 4 and 5. Offense has been an issue as the Steelers have scored just 30 total points over their the last two weeks.
The good news? Pittsburgh is 5-1 at home this season with four straight wins (only home loss was vs. the Cowboys on SNF in Week 5).
