‘The Bullet’ led for the vast majority of the game and wrapped up his 11-7 victory with a 56 checkout. Bunting outscored the Dutchman with an 102.50 average to Van Gerwen’s 98.27, the Liverpudlian also scored the most 180s between the two in a thoroughly deserved triumph.
Bunting beat Ross Smith 6-5 in the first round before triumphing over world No.1 and world champion Luke Humphries 10-7 in the second round on Saturday. As he received the trophy and £65,000, Bunting held back the tears as he dabbed his eyes and thanked the crowd who serenaded him with chants of his name and sang his walk-out song Titanium back to him.
Bunting’s maiden PDC major win has been overdue for the world No.16, taking until his tenth year on the PDC tour to lift his maiden title after previously winning the WDF World Championship and two World Masters.
Five-time Masters champ Van Gerwen was brilliantly gracious in defeat as he went back on stage to congratulate Bunting’s son, Toby, who had joined his dad on stage to celebrate in front of the crowd.
Reacting to his triumph, Bunting said: “I promised that I wouldn’t cry if I won, but it means a lot to me because I’ve been in the PDC for a lot of years now. Winning trophies was the main aim obviously after moving over from the BDO.
“But when you come here you are playing the best of the best. These boys will push you all the way. Michael van Gerwen is a multiple world champion and a fantastic dart player. But I really deserved this trophy.”
