Storm Darragh

As a result of Stormy Darragh, an Arctic Plunge looks set to take place in a few day's time with Met Eireann issuing an update on the chances of snow.

Leading forecasters are claiming that the country will not have seen a cold front this bad "for many years"

The coldest of the weather looks set to push down from the north around December 12th and 13th with temperatures dropping to as low as -8 degrees in parts of the country.

Daniel aka @TheSnowDreamer posted on Twitter: "Arctic blast on the pub run near mid-December. Many years since we had a cold air outbreak from the north as cold as that. Just for fun! But curious the tendency for more potent northerlies in recent months."

The GEFS weather model has also forecast an arctic plunge for next weekend but it won't be long-lasting with milder air making a comeback.

Storm Darragh looks set to be an "aggressive" front, with leading experts calling it a 'dynamic' start to December weather-wise.

The Snow Dreamer added: "The first half of December is looking rather interesting and dynamic, to say the least. Noticeable temperature rises and falls in the short term culminating in a more aggressive cold plunge near 8th?"

Brian Gaze of The Weather Outlook added his own thoughts on Storm Darragh appearing: "This *could* be Storm Darragh. The risk of the next named storm turning up through the week ahead is quite high."

Here is the forecast for the next few days according to Met Eireann:

Today

Plenty of dry weather today with long spells of sunshine and just some showers. Highest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees in light to moderate northwest winds, becoming light westerly by the evening.

Tonight

Mostly dry tonight with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees generally with frost and ice developing in places in light southeasterly or variable breezes.

Tomorrow

Dry for most tomorrow morning with some early sunny spells before outbreaks of rain extend from the west with some heavy falls possible and with a chance of some sleet on high ground in the north. Sunny spells and isolated showers will move in from the west during the afternoon as the rain clears eastwards from most areas by the evening. Highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees. Southeasterly winds will be moderate, occasionally fresh but strong at times near coasts and will veer northwesterly as the rain clears.
