Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald had a rather unusual encounter with the past while on the hustings in Kerry with party candidate Pa Daly on Saturday.

Mary Lou was given a whistle-stop tour of the county capital and popped into Madden’s Café and cultural hub on Milk Market Lane.
It was here that Mary Lou was introduced to none other than Maggie Thatcher – the café’s resident Yorkshire terrier.
‘Maggie’ – as she is affectionately known to her many customers and admirers – initially took her time in approaching Mary Lou.
The Sinn Féin leader seemed genuinely surprised that someone would want to name their dog after the most controversial matriarch in British politics. But it was all in good jest.
Eventually, both Maggie and Mary Lou briefly exchanged pleasantries before Maggie turned and left again.
Madden’s Café is run by Rebekah Wall and Ash Maguire and is a focal point for the arts in Tralee.
