RTE viewers were all left saying same thing about a "gripping" new show.

The Boy That Never Was is the new Irish series adaptation of the best-selling novel by author Karen Perry.

The Boy That Never Was will expand over a series of four thrilling episodes.

The plot follows parents Harry and Robin as they live the life of artists in Essaouira, Morocco with their toddler son, Dillon.

Suddenly, tragedy strikes when an earthquake hits and their apartment crumbles – with a sleeping Dillon inside.

When Harry races back to rescue his child, there is no sign of him. Not even a body.

The show then flashes forward to three years later as Harry and Robin have returned to Dublin and are co-existing as two grieving parents just trying to get by.

With Dillon’s body never found, the absence of and need for closure lays between them.

The couple try to move on by renovating an old property in Dublin.

One day, in a crowded train station in Dublin city centre, Harry believes he spots Dillon with a red-haired woman.

Harry chases them, but loses track of the boy, leaving himon a mission to find his son.

The first episode aired today at 9.35pm on RTE One - and RTE viewers were quick to share their opinions on social media.

One viewer labelled the show: "Gripping."

Another said: "Despite its heavy subject matter, it's kind of refreshing to see a new RTE drama that isn't just a straightforward crime caper."

Janet added: "The first episode of The Boy That Never Was was totally gripping. Will have to restrain myself from looking up the ending. Sunday night telly perfection."

Gerard wrote: "That was good..."

Another added: "This ain't half bad at all. Strong opener."

The exciting new series stars renowned Northern Irish actor Colin Morgan as Harry and Dublin actress Toni O'Rourke as Robin.

Morgan is best known for his role in the BBC fantasy series Merlin and Oscar-nominated film Belfast.

The show is directed by Hannah Quinn who is known for her work on Eastenders, Vikings and Fate- The Winx Saga on Netflix.
