Mixed reaction as Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried cast in ...

The Housemaid is arguably one of the most riveting psychological thrillers of the past few years, so it was somewhat inevitable that it would get the silver screen treatment.

Fans were ecstatic to learn that Freida McFadden's page-turner is being adapted by Lionsgate, but it seems not everyone is happy about the A-list casting.

The story follows a housemaid, Millie, who goes to work for the seemingly perfect wealthy family, the Winchesters, cleaning up for them and caring for their daughter.

As time goes by she becomes increasingly frustrated at the mother Nina's vindictive behaviour and at the same time is drawn to her handsome husband.

She begins to imagine herself living Nina's life and can't resist the urge to try on one of her dresses. By the time she realises that the Winchesters have dark secrets and that the door to her attic room only locks from the outside, it's too late; but then again this maid has secrets of her own and the Winchesters have no idea who they're dealing with.

As news of the film's adaption broke, the word was also out that Mean Girls alum Amanda Seyfried has signed on to play Nina, much to the delight of fans who think she's a great match for the part.

'OMG not my girl Amanda, she's just perfect for the role,' one fan wrote, while another commented: 'Heck yes, perfect casting, can't wait.'

They were less enthusiastic about Sydney Sweeney being cast in the lead role with one fan demanding to know: 'Why? But Why Sydney Sweeney... no better actors in Hollywood?'

'Sydney nooooooo.... It might just be me but she's not that good of an actress. There were waaaay other choices for Millie,' another wrote.

Alternative names suggested for the role included You star Victoria Pedretti. That said, others were thrilled to see Sydney nab the high-profile part.

Taking up the helm as Director for the project is Paul Feig, best known for his work on Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters, who posted a clip of himself enjoying a martini alongside the book.

For the author Freida McFadden, the film adaptation was a huge thrill and she revealed that she is delighted with the casting- that's all you can ask for!
