The DJ, who co-hosted the award-winning Dermot and Dave Show with friend Dave Moore - admitted to being close to tears as signed off after 21 years on air.

After their ‘best bits’ played out, Dave told Dermot: “I noticed you and I couldn’t make eye contact.”

Dermot added: “I was gone.”

But the funnyman didn’t let the emotional farewell get in the way of his usual comic demeanour - and quipped that his wife, Corrina had dropped him to the train station earlier in the morning - promising to listen to the whole three-hour show for the very first time.

Dermot and Dave worked together at 98FM and then went on to Today FM where they have co-hosted their popular show since 2014.

Dave will now continue with his own brand new show at Today FM - starting on August 28.

Earlier in the week, Dermot said that leaving was an “extremely difficult decision”.

He said: "I actually made this extremely difficult decision because I have other areas in my life that I'm really passionate about and I want to spend some time really devoting my time to them.”

During their last ever show together, the boys described each other as “best friends”.

Magician Keith Barry was one of many well-wishers offering messages of support to Dermot on his departure.

He wrote in a tribute that the lads were “two of the soundest individuals in showbiz”.

Keith continued: “I’ve had many magical moments with Dermot Whelan and Dave over the years.

“Looking forward to what they both have in store as separate entities in the future. Good luck lads!”

Dermot ended the show by thanking his listeners and all the team at the station as well as his former colleagues on 98FM.

After listening to all the tributes to him, he joked: “Weirdly, during that montage, I kind of know what it feels like to be dead.

“But thankfully I’m still here.”’
