Rosemary Burns, the widow of Celtic legend Tommy Burns, has died after falling ill on a flight from Tenerife to Glasgow.

The Jet2 plane made an emergency landing in Cork, Ireland, after declaring an on-board incident in the early hours of 3 July.

Mrs Burns, 69, became unwell while on holiday in Tenerife and decided to fly home early, a source close to the family told the Daily Record.

"She decided to end her trip and fly back to Scotland," the unnamed person told the Scottish newspaper.

"She got on the plane and became unwell. The flight was supposed to land in Glasgow but it ended up being diverted to Cork."

Jet2 confirmed a flight from Tenerife was diverted to Cork after a passenger became unwell on board in the early hours of Wednesday.

Former Celtic manager and player Tommy Burns died from skin cancer in 2008.

In a statement, Celtic Football Club sent its condolences to Mrs Burns' family and friends.

Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell said: "This is absolutely devastating news. Everyone knew Rosemary as a devoted wife to Tommy, and also a loving mum and grandmother.

"All our thoughts and prayers are with Emma, Jenna, Michael and Jonathan, her grandchildren and also with Rosemary's wider family and many friends who will all be heartbroken at this awful time."
