Tommy Robinson has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for contempt of court after admitting to breaching an injunction that prevented him from repeating libellous allegations against a Syrian refugee.

In a ruling on Friday, Mr Justice Johnson handed down the sentence for “flagrant” breaches of the court order, which included airing a documentary at a rally in Trafalgar Square in July. Anti-fascist campaign group Hope Not Hate provided a dossier of evidence to the authorities regarding the breaches.

Responding to the sentencing, MCB Secretary-General, Zara Mohammed, stated:

“Tommy Robinson has long been notorious for his racism and blatant Islamophobia, which has fuelled a surge of hatred against minority communities, especially Muslims and refugees.

It is welcome news that he has been jailed for his false allegations against a young Syrian refugee who faced appalling abuse, including being assaulted at school. Despite this, Robinson profited from this campaign of misinformation, even turning it into a video to be shown to thousands at Trafalgar Square. His actions were deplorable, and it is fitting that he has now been held accountable.

The courts must go further to bring him to justice for his role in inciting extreme far-right riots and spreading terror on our streets, which continues to inflame tensions and divisions in society.”
