Tottenham vs Brentford live updates: Kane goal gives hosts the lead

Second half underway, Damsgaard on for Onyeka

46' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

We're back underway for the second half.

There is one half-time change as Damsgaard comes on for Onyeka who looked out of his depth in the first half — he gave away the foul that led to the free-kick Kane scored from.

Brentford need more control

Thomas Frank's 4-3-3 gamble has not paid off for Brentford so far.

Tottenham have created a lot of chances on the counter and could have easily scored more.

Brentford need to get more control after the break and stop this game from being so frantic.

Fun, open game

It has been a fun, open game.

Spurs look much more dangerous with the change in system and extra attacking player on the pitch.

Kulusevski and Son have both been lively, it is Kulusevski's best game in ages and it's led to a positive atmosphere.

Brentford have threatened once or twice on the break too.

Tactical observation

Tactical observation

Both sides have opted to deviate from the formations that are expected of them.

Brentford usually opt for a 5-3-2 against stronger opposition away from home but have gone for a 4-3-3 today.

Similarly, Spurs have mostly played a 3-4-3 this season, but have lined up in a 4-2-3-1 today and seem to be benefitting from the shift.

Ryan Mason’s four attackers are alternating very well making Spurs much more unpredictable, with Skipp and Bissouma sitting slightly deeper freeing up those attackers in a way not possible in the 3-4-3.

Moment of the half — Harry Kane’s goal

Moment of the half — Harry Kane’s goal

It really couldn’t be anything else, could it?

In what could be his final home game as a Tottenham player, he has given Spurs fans another fantastic moment to remember.

Kulusevski's delicate back heel at the free kick opened up space for Kane, giving him a better shooting opportunity, and he whipped it into the top corner with venom.

In a game where both sides started positively, Kane’s goal was crucial for putting his team in control.

Tottenham in front at half-time

Tottenham in front at half-time

HT Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

And that's it for the first half.

Tottenham have been much the better team and will perhaps be disappointed to only be one goal in front.

Where has this quality been all season?

As for Brentford, they're really missing Toney but, most importantly, they're still in the game at the break.

Raya saves from Kulusevski

45+4' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

Tottenham have burst back into life in the last few minutes, Brentford need the half-time whistle.

Some more good attacking play from the hosts allowed Kulusevski to find space in the penalty area and he let fly towards the top corner, but Raya was equal to it and turned it behind for a corner.

Huge block from Mee to deny Son

45+2' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

A massive goal-saving block from Mee, the second of the half for Brentford.

Son twisted and turned inside the opposition penalty area and worked a yard of space for a strike.

His effort was destined for the bottom corner before Mee flew in to get in the way of it.

Just before that, there were four minutes added on.

Bissouma shown yellow card for a nasty foul on Wissa

45' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

Well, that was out of nowhere.

Bissouma has just flown into a tackle on Wissa with both of his feet off the floor.

A yellow card is shown — the first of the game — and it is fair, but a very risky challenge to make.

Danjuma heads inches wide

42' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

So close to a second goal for Tottenham.

They beat the Brentford press with relative ease and Son clipped a perfect ball onto Danjuma's head. From near the penalty spot, he could only angle his header a couple of inches wide of the far post.

Brentford fightback relies on Henry nailing his delivery

39' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

There is a goal for Brentford in this game but it relies on Henry nailing his delivery — he has got into lots of good positions but cannot quite find the perfect ball.

They need to get Schade in behind Royal and Sanchez more too.

Raya down for Brentford

37' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

Raya has been down for the last couple of minutes and has received some medical attention.

The cynic in me has to point out that goalkeepers have been doing this a lot this season to allow their managers to conduct a mini in-game team talk.

The Spaniard is back up on his feet and will continue.

Jensen fires over

35' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

Brentford are lacking the quality to really trouble Spurs this afternoon but they are having a few chances.

The ball rolled out nicely to Jensen on the edge of the box, but his effort flew over the top of the crossbar.

They don't tend to shoot from range very often...

Brentford missing a focal point

31' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

How early is too early to say that Brentford are missing Ivan Toney?

His physical presence is just as important as his goals and, in his absence, Wissa is struggling to have a similar impact, which is to be expected.

Danjuma wastes promising counter attack

27' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

Brentford aren't learning from throwing too many players forward.

All of Tottenham's promising play has come from counter attacks and the latest saw Janelt miss the ball, giving Danjumaa a run at goal.

But his final touch is poor and his pass is even worse, allowing the visitors to clear their lines.

Henry clears Royal's headed shot off the line

24' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

Brilliant defending by Henry who has just saved his side a certain goal.

Some lovely link-up between Kulusevski and Son ended with the latter floating a ball in the box where Royal was arriving. His header was on target and destined for the back of the net, until it was headed off the goal line by Henry.

The resulting corner was then headed wide by Sanchez.

Yellow card shown to Ryan Mason

22' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

The referee's yellow card is out, but not for one of the players.

It is Tottenham boss Mason who has received a caution following his reaction to a decision to penalise Skipp for a foul on Onyeka.

I can understand Mason's frustration as it looked like the Spurs midfielder won the ball cleanly.

Loves a London derby

19' Tottenham 1-0 Brentford

The opening goal was Kane's 10th in London derbies this season in the Premier League.

He is just the second player to reach that tally in a season, after Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink during the 2001-02 campaign.
