He went into the game hoping he could score his first goal for his new club, and Troy Parrott says it was a “beautiful feeling” to score four times as his AZ Alkmaar side romped home to a 9-1 win over Heerenveen.

Having joined AZ from Tottenham in the summer, Parrott had gone four games without a goal for the club but he managed to find the net midway through the first half to make it 2-1 and then clocked up a hat-trick in the space of eight minutes in the second half, earning AZ their biggest ever win in the Dutch top flight.

“I feel amazing, really good. It’s really expected that this would happen, that we’d win 9-1, and it’s not every game that you’d score four goals so it’s a beautiful feeling to have a special night like this. I really wanted that first goal and I’m really glad it came in front of our own fans,” he said.

“To do this in front of all the fans here in our home stadium, it's a beautiful thing. We forced them to make mistakes and we were there to punish them.

“Obviously for me as a striker it's disappointing not to score in the previous games because I always want to score goals. But I don't stress over these things, it's normal, this is football you can't play every game perfect. I understand this and I believe in my own ability and I believe the team that we've got here is a really good team and we will create chances and tonight that happened and I was there.”

The former Belvedere player was relieved to get the goals after a frustrating window at international level as he was an unused sub in the Nations League losses to England and Greece.
