Live scores, updates and highlights from the first round of the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club

LOS ANGELES -- One of the most anticipated major championships of the last decade arrived Thursday with the 2023 U.S. Open beginning at Los Angeles Country Club. There were storylines for days with play beginning, but Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele made sure the sports world was talking about them by the time their final putts dropped Thursday afternoon.

Fowler entered the clubhouse first setting a U.S. Open scoring record with an 8-under 62 that also ties the lowest round ever shot at a major championship. After starting hot-and-cold on the back nine, he poured in one birdie after another on the front finishing 6 under across his final nine holes with nary a bogey in that stretch. Just minutes later, Schauffele matched him with a bogey-free round including a matching 5-under score on the front nine where he concluded his day.

"I knew it was close. I wasn't sure the exact number. I was really just trying to keep moving forward," Fowler said after his round. "Made a lot of good swings. Been a while since I've made some midrange putts, so it was nice to make a lot of those. i kept putting myself in great positions and kind of picked my way around the course."

"Pretty good flow throughout the round. I was looking at Rickie up on the board all day, so every time I made a birdie, it just said I was still in second place. I just felt like, if he was doing it, why couldn't I?" Schauffele added.

The 62s match Branden Grace's effort in the third round of the 2017 Open Championship as the lowest scores ever posted at a major. Neither Fowler nor Schauffele have ever hoisted a major championship trophy. For Fowler, who is in the midst of a career resurgence in 2023, breaking through in Hollywood would be apropos for one of the game's brightest stars.

Best of all? We're just getting started at the U.S. Open. CBS Sports will update this story with scores and highlights from the U.S. Open below. Xander Schauffele matches Rickie Fowler with record 62

Just minutes after Rickie Fowler set the U.S. Open record with an 8-under 62, Xander Schauffele has matched it with one of his own. Schauffele went around LACC Thursday in a bogey-free fashion carding eight birdies against 10 pars. Two birdies in his last three holes allowed him to become the third man to shoot 62 in major championship history joining not only Fowler but also Branden Grace from the 2017 Open.

Rickie Fowler breaks major scoring record with 62

It was a masterpiece Rickie Fowler painted Thursday at Los Angeles Country Club as a 10-birdie performance gave way to an 8-under 62. Fowler's effort ties the major championship record first set by Branden Grace at the 2017 Open and sets the new record for the U.S. Open which was previously 63. His 10 birdies were also a new record. He currently leads the tournament by a stroke over Xander Schauffele.

Phil turning back the clocks…again?

Lefty finds himself 1 under on the more difficult back nine at LACC. He has a putt on 18 to return to 2 under and then head to the front side where birdies can be had. Nos. 1, 3, 6 and 8 are all fantastic birdie opportunities and will provide chances for Mickelson to make his way onto the first page of the leaderboard.

Koepka showing some rust

The five-time major champion is 2 over thru his first four holes and a full 10 strokes off the pace. Koepka is someone who has been very vocal about liking to play his way into major championships throughout his career. In the 14 majors he didn't play the week prior, he has seven finishes outside the top 30. It is very, very early, but less than an ideal start.

Rory rollin' early

The former U.S. Open champion began his day with back-to-back birdies to find a spot on the first page of the leaderboard. The driver has been on a string through just two holes and could be a sign of things to come. McIlroy currently finds himself in a tie for seventh.

Afternoon wave begins

Let's see how this scoring will affect players in the afternoon. They begin eight strokes off the lead by only three off Paul Barjon, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau who are the closest pursuers. There were two outlier rounds today, and players need to realize that and stick to their game plans.
