2023 U.S. Open leaderboard: Live coverage, golf scores today in ...

16 Jun 2023
Live scores, updates and highlights from the second round of the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club

The 2023 U.S. Open got off to a ferocious start at Los Angeles Country Club. Record scoring conditions set the stage for Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler to separate from the pack with stunning 8-under 62s, breaking the U.S. Open record by matching the lowest scores in major championship history. In possession of a two-stroke lead over the field, both players will need to keep their foot on the gas if the benign conditions continue.

Two-time major champion Dustin Johnson was nearly flawless en route to a 6-under 64. He clipped four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, who signed for a 65 to sit inside the top 16 on the leaderboard after the first round for the first time in seven events. Culpable to slow starts, the world No. 3 now faces an opportunity to parlay his momentum into more of the same Friday morning.

Meanwhile world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler found some form on the greens and put together a scratchy 67 and finds his name on the first page of the leaderboard alongside Bryson DeChambeau. Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Cameron Smith and Jon Rahm round out notables under par and still within shouting distance after one of the lowest scoring days in U.S. Open history.

Best of all? We're just getting started at the U.S. Open. CBS Sports will update this story with scores and highlights from the U.S. Open below. Check out the live scores at the top of this story, a more detailed leaderboard, Round 2 tee times and our complete U.S. Open TV schedule and coverage guide.

Three quick takes

I walked around this morning at LACC, and I have three thoughts.

1. The course isn't really playing more difficult. It's tough when you get no wind and no sun for the golf course to get baked out at all. That's a huge bummer, of course, because everybody wants it to be firmer and faster. Also, I agree with this thread by Kevin Van Valkenburg.

2. The vibe here is not great so far. Perhaps it will get better as the week wears on, but right now it feels more like a U.S. Amateur than a U.S. open in terms of crowd size, fervor and noise.

3. Rory is not hitting it as well as he did on Thursday. I think his tournament hinges on the next nine holes and he needs to shoot 65 to really have a shot to win on Sunday. He, like most golfers, has almost always won from out in front, and it's going to be important for him to view himself as the guy to beat going into Saturday and Sunday.

Rory let's chance slide by on 15

The short par 3 is giving players great looks for birdie, but McIlroy was unable to connect to return to even par and 5 under for the championship. Alongside him at 4 under is Tony Finau who is 2 under on the day in the early proceedings. Cameron Smith is making a move on the more difficult back nine (2 under today, 3 under for the tournament).

Clark takes solo lead

From 45 feet on the long par-4 16th, Clark converts his third birdie of the back nine and takes he solo lead at 9 under. LACC remains susceptible to low scores as Clark is 3 under on his day. As a whole, nine holes are currently playing under par and nine are playing over par. Matt Fitzpatrick also just made an ace on 15 — the third of the week.

Hideki having his way early

The man from Japan has two early birdies in his first three holes. The lone omission came on the 280 yard par-3 11th where he failed to connect for his birdie from just inside 10 feet. Matsuyama has returned to even par and inside the cut line which is looking to settle around 2 over.

DJ cards a snowman early

That was U-G-L-Y. Dustin Johnson signs for a quad on his second hole of the day and has dropped to 2 under for the championship. After hitting his tee shot in the fairway bunker, Johnson's layup found the rough. His third found the barranca and his fifth went long of the green. Two putts after his chip led to an eight. I'm not sure if the carnage has arrived or if that was just a really bad hole played by Johnson.

Rory rolls onto the golf course

The world No. 3 begins his day on No. 10 with a fairway wood finding the short grass. While he aims to make headway towards the leaders, Brooks Koepka (+1) will look to bounce back. Koepka ranked outside the top 130 in strokes gained off the tee yesterday — he needs to find more fairways.

Soft conditions early

Despite the pin sheet, the location of some of these flags are gettable early. Wyndham Clark began his day with a birdie on No. 10 to get to 7 under and just one off the lead. There are a few funnel pins laced throughout the early portions of each nine and will set up more scoring chances. If I had to guess, 12 under leads after today and the USGA will turn up the heat come the weekend.
