Records were broken on a low-scoring first round at the 2023 US Open at Los Angeles Country Club as Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele set an outstanding early pace with both American’s getting into the clubhouse eight under par.

Fowler was the first to break the record for the lowest scoring round in US history before Schauffele joined him in the record books minutes later to take a share of the lead into round two.

Elsewhere, Rory McIlroy is just three shots behind despite a bogey on the last after an impressive round of 65 with world No 1 Scottie Scheffler (-3) and Masters champion Jon Rahm (-1) also in the red. Dustin Johnson, one of the stars of LIV golf, is right in contention too at six under par.

This tournament is the first time in 75 years that the US Open is being played in Los Angeles with LA Country Club hosting the event for the first time. A more challenging layout is expected for the players this afternoon but, with little wind expected, there may be more birdie opportunities on offer today.

Tony Finau finds the sand on the 11th and finishes right up against the edge of the bunker. He does well to get it out but a 24-foot putt for par is difficult and he can’t convert.

A first bogey of the round drops him back alongside Rory McIlroy at -4.

Matt Fitzpatrick makes latest hole-in-one at US Open as Wyndham Clark takes lead

Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick enjoyed another memorable moment in the US Open as he recorded the third hole-in-one of the week at Los Angeles Country Club.

Fitzpatrick’s tee shot on the 115-yard 15th pitched beyond the flag and span back into the hole, although he could not see where the ball had landed and was walking off the tee before the crowd’s roar sparked wild celebrations.

The eagle lifted Fitzpatrick from one over par to one under, eight shots behind the lead held by American Wyndham Clark, who had covered his first seven holes in three under to overhaul Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele.

At the minute pars are as valuable as birdies. Wyndham Clark rescues another hole after being off target from the tee on 12 while Tony Finau knocks one in on the 10th after leaving a birdie effort short.

Another birdie chance goes begging for Rory as he skirts the edge of the hole on the ninth. He can’t believe this one hasn’t dropped and looks to the heavens as if asking: “how?”

Things seem to be getting trickier out there, even for the players at the top of the leaderboard.

Since taking the lead with a birdie at 16 Wyndham Clark has had to scrap to make par over the next four holes. Most recently hs sank a par putt from nine feet on the second.
