Wayne Lineker has thanked fans for their support after a shocking incident where he was knocked unconscious by an assailant.

The Ibiza club owner, 60, took to social media to reassure his followers that he was okay following the attacking - sharing a snap of himself giving the camera a thumbs up as he enjoyed a fruity cocktail.

Captioning the snap on Instagram, Wayne told fans: "I wanted to write this post to let everyone know that I’m doing ok… I have a few stitches and a swollen lip. It could have been much worse so I count myself very fortunate I wasn’t standing 2 yards further back, as my head would have impacted the wall.

"Obviously the video is very disturbing to see especially for my family. The papers were very accurate and it was a simple case of me just trying to protect a girl from being harassed. Thank you everyone for all your messages of concern the support has been really overwhelming."

The brother of Match of the Day host Gary Lineker first took to social media to share his ordeal on Wednesday after collapsing in the street when he was attacked at 4am the same day on the party hotspot of Ibiza. Disturbing footage emerged showing Wayne, who owns several hotspots on the island including the famous O Beach Club in San Antonio, attempting to shield himself with his arm.

The altercation occurred outside Eden bar in San Antonio, shortly after Wayne was seen in a heated exchange with a group of men who seemed to be harassing one of his female friends. After the attack, Wayne ended his silence on social media with a heartfelt post dedicated to his son on Instagram.

Wayne was reportedly knocked unconscious for a minimum of six minutes after being floored by a thug on Wednesday morning. An 18-year-old bystander revealed that the altercation began when the assailant and his friends started harassing Wayne's female friend, who is believed to be in her 20s.

The witness added: "It was horrible - he looked like he could have been dead at one point. Wayne just fell on the floor and the man and his friends ran off. He was completely unconscious for about 20 minutes at least. He wasn't really speaking much when he did eventually come back round. I stayed to help him and the police turned up but they weren't there for long and didn't really do much and left quickly," according to The Sun.
