With the international break a cruel intruder on an exciting start to the Premier League campaign, top clubs are still having fun.

A Red Devils Legends team managed by Bryan Robson and featuring Rooney alongside Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes raised almost £1million for the Manchester United Foundation against Celtic.

And to the delight of the Old Trafford faithful, Rooney rolled back the years by delivering a strong dose of nostalgia.

Up stepped Rooney and Artur Boruc, in the Celtic goal didn't stand a chance

The Pole was left rooted to the spot in the middle of his goal as the ball was whipped up and over the wall, and into the top left corner.

Postage stamp stuff.

It left the MUTV commentary team stunned, with commentator Tim Long offering: "He's still got it."

Rooney himself agreed but poked fun at his fitness levels by saying: "Yeah, I'm alright with the ball at my feet. It's just the running part!

"I was tempted to shoot more but wanted to keep the ball as well."

The goal was even sweeter as it has been two years since Man United fans witnessed one of their players net directly from a free-kick.

The last was Cristiano Ronaldo's effort to complete his hat-trick in a 3-2 win over Norwich in April 2022 in the Premier League.

Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic reveals the best striker he ever faced between the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney, Peter Crouch, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez

Unfortunately for Rooney and co, it wasn't to be a winner on this occasion as Gary Hooper netted the leveller to force penalties.

Man United then lost a shoot-out 5-4 with Darren Fletcher missing the key kick.

However, the money raised for charity was far more important, with Rooney adding: “It was special to be back at Old Trafford today for the Legends game, and it is all for such a good cause. It was great to play here again.

“Manchester United Foundation is doing a great job and being involved for a long time, seeing the work it does first-hand, any time we can give to try to help, it’s always great to do that. It’s a great cause.

“It is important that we continue to do what we can, when we can, to support the Foundation and continue to put smiles on children's faces.”

Now a manager with Championship side Plymouth, Rooney admitted he was scared to lace up his boots once again.

Managerial stints with Derby County, DC United, and Birmingham City preceded his current spell with the Pilgrims, who are winless in four Championship matches.

No wonder Rooney was delighted to get back out onto the Old Trafford pitch and showcase his talent once more.

He said pre-match: "It’s a bit scary to be honest. It’s my first game for a long time.

"But no, I’m looking forward to it, being back on the pitch and seeing the fans again will be great.

"It’s always great to see the team-mates you played with and some players who I didn’t play with as well."

No matter how long time away from the pitch is, Old Trafford will always remember the name 'Wayne Rooney'...
