A Status Yellow weather warning is currently in place for parts of Ireland as heavy rain is set to batter the country.

The rain alert is valid for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Tipperary, and Waterford until 4am tomorrow. The warning reads: "Rain becoming persistent and heavy at times. Potential impacts: localised flooding, difficult travelling conditions, and poor visibility."

Rain in Munster and south Leinster will spread northwards into Ulster. It will rain throughout the day, becoming heavy in parts of Leinster and Ulster.

It will be dry in the western coastal counties. Daytime temperatures will be around 13 to 18 degrees.

Tonight will see rain continue over Ulster, north Connacht and the northern half of Leinster. It will be drier further south with some clear spells developing in Munster. The lowest temperatures will be around 8 to 11 degrees.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy over the northern half of the country with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle and with highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees. It will be brighter further south with some sunny spells and highs of 17 to 20 degrees in moderate to fresh northwest winds.

Tuesday night

"Outbreaks of rain mainly over Ulster and Leinster at first, becoming mostly confined to Ulster through the night as mostly dry conditions with clear spells in the south and west extend over much of the country. Temperatures not falling below 10 to 13 degrees with mostly light or moderate northerly winds.

Wednesday

"Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will likely persist over Ulster through much of the day. A mix of cloud, sunny spells and well scattered showers elsewhere, with the best of the sunshine in the Munster and Connacht. Highest temperatures ranging from 14 degrees in the north to 20 degrees in the south with moderate, occasionally fresh, northwesterly winds, strong at times near northwest coasts.

Wednesday night

"Cloudy conditions in the north along with outbreaks of rain and drizzle will sink southwards during the night. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees in light to moderate north or northwest winds.

Thursday

"Mostly cloudy at first with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, mainly over the northern half of the country, gradually tracking southwards, becoming patchier as it does so. Good spells of sunshine will develop in the north during the morning, following behind the rain, reaching all but southern areas by the end of the day. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with light to moderate northerly winds, fresher along northern and exposed Atlantic coasts.

Friday

"Mostly dry with a mix of cloud and sunny spells with just a few light showers about. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees in mostly light northerly breezes."
