Weather experts are banking on temperatures to finally heat up for more than a few days at a time after an underwhelming summer so far.

Several different heatwaves could be on the way across the world, which would at last bring July temperatures to Ireland.

"It's not often in recent years that I've had the phrase 'temperatures not as far below average as last week' on the brain, but this summer it's happened two months in a row! Meanwhile, SE Europe is in the cooker," meteorologist James Peacock stated.

Another expert predcited temperatures up to 10 degrees higher than normal and stated: "Heat wave next week in the Northern Hemisphere especially over America, Europe and Asia".

Donegal Weather Channel explained that the reason the weather is so unsettled at the moment is due to the "position of the jet stream which is sitting just across and to the south Ireland feeding cooler air from the north and northwest".

However, the jet stream looks set to move northward later this month which would allow higher pressureand warmer conditions.

Met Eireann have issued the following short-term forecast.

Tonight

Outbreaks of rain and drizzle in Munster and south Leinster, will gradually extending over much of Leinster tonight, extending into east Ulster by morning. Largely dry in the west and northwest with any rain or drizzle light and patchy.

Temperatures generally not falling below 9 to 13 degrees. Breezes becoming light to moderate northeast overnight, and increasing strong along east and south coasts.

Tomorrow

Mostly cloudy tomorrow with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, persistent and heavy in the southeast, east and northeast through the day with the possibility of localised flooding. Driest in the southwest, west, and northwest especially later in the day with sunny spells developing here.

Highest temperatures of 13 to 18 degrees. Northeast winds moderate to fresh but strong at times along east and northeast coasts.
