Met Eireann have issued a double weather warning for thunderstorns as lightning strikes have hit areas across Ireland overnight.

Sunday night saw the sky illuminated with bolts of lightning making their way across the country.

The double warning was issued on Monday at 5:25am and will be in place until 7am, according to Met Eireann.

The warning for rain and thunderstorms was issued for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath.

Meanwhile another warning was issued for the northern counties as well for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry, also valid until 7am on Monday.

Thunderstorms arrived in the south first in West Cork before quickly coming from the west coast and lightning strikes made their way across Clare and Galway into Roscommon on Sunday night.

Footage taken by a resident in Athenry shows the lightning strikes hitting late on Sunday night.

Meanwhile here is the forecast for the next few days according to Met Eireann:

Today

Heavy showers will clear from northeast Connacht this morning, leaving a largely dry day with sunny spells. There is a chance of an isolated light shower in the west. Highest temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds in the morning, then easing light to moderate.

Tonight

Tonight will become cloudy with outbreaks of rain or drizzle. Some mist will form too. Lowest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees with moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow morning will be cloudy and breezy with outbreaks of rain or drizzle. The rain will clear eastwards by the early afternoon and will be followed by dry weather and sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 16 to 18 degrees with moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds easing and becoming west to northwest.
