A "technical issue" has caused a widespread outage for Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram this evening.

Thousands of users worldwide are reporting issues accessing Meta-owned social media platforms.

In a post on X, Meta said: "We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps.

"We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience."

Glitch "largely fixed"

A message posted on Meta's X account, several hours later at 10.34pm, said the glitch had been largely fixed: "Thanks for bearing with us! We're 99% of the way there - just doing some last checks.

"We apologise to those who've been affected by the outage."

Thousands report issues accessing Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp

A huge spike in searches on Downdetector shows thousands of people reporting an issue with Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp this evening.

The social media apps are down for many users across the globe due to a technical issue. Facebook outages were first reported at about 6pm today reached more than 100,000 complaints of an issue.

Instagram currently has around 10,000 complaints. WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, saw numerous reported disruptions around the same time.
