Eight counties are under a Status Yellow wind warning today, ahead of incoming wintry showers brining both hail and the possibility of snow.

Met Éireann this morning added a snow and ice warning for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim and Louth which will take effect from 10pm Saturday until 9am on Sunday morning.

Hail, sleet and snow are possible on Sunday morning, Met Éireann said, as they warned of poor visibility, icy stretches and difficult travel conditions for affected counties.

A status yellow wind warning is currently in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo until 2pm on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Clare, Kerry and Limerick will see the same warning come into effect from 3pm today, for 24 hours.

Wave overtopping and/or spray difficult travelling conditions especially near the coast and some fallen trees are possible impacts for counties under warnings.

Today will see rain in the south and east will clear quickly, leading to a windy day with sunshine and showers, Met Éireann has said.

Winds will reach gale force along Atlantic coasts with afternoon temperatures between six to 10 degrees.

Tonight will still be windy with showers becoming widespread overnight.

Some of these will be heavy and wintry with a mix of rain, hail, sleet and snow, the snow mainly on hills and in the north of the country.

It will stay above freezing, with lowest temperatures 2-4 degrees overnight.

Tomorrow morning will continue windy with blustery showers, some of which will be heavy with a mix of rain, hail, sleet and possibly some snow, becoming confined to the west and north in the afternoon.

Winds will reach gale force on western and northern coasts but will begin to ease towards evening. Afternoon temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees.

On Sunday night showers will gradually become isolated and there'll be clear spells for a time.

Lowest temperatures 2 to 5 degrees during the night.

On Monday, light rain or drizzle will spread eastwards through the morning and continue for the rest of the day.

It will be much warmer, with temperatures slowly rising to reach 10 to 13 degrees in the afternoon.

Then Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and St. Stephen's Day will all be mostly cloudy and apart from some light rain or drizzle at times, but it'll be mostly dry.

Day time temperatures will reach 11 or 12 degrees with little or no change in temperature through the night.
