Zara McDermott revealed she was 'spat on' by a man while Christmas shopping in a 'vile' unprovoked attack on Tuesday.

The Love Island star turned documentary maker, 28, took to her Instagram story moments after the incident occured to share what happened with her two million followers.

She was standing outside a Lidl store wth her brother's girlfriend Alice as she recalled the disgusting act.

Zara explained: 'Guys, me and Alice are actually really shocked at what just happened. We were just getting some last minute christmas bits just walking down the street.

'Normal, normal stuff and this guy out of nowhere runs up to us, spits on us. Thankfully it just missed because of the wind and then walked off in the other direction. I can't believe it.'

She wrote on the screen: 'No I'm shocked!!! What is wrong with people?' alongside a crying emoji.

Zara later posted a screenshot of a DM from one of her followers, which read: 'Misogony! How festive!'

The influencer wrote on the screen: 'Merry Christmas!!! I'm still kinda in shock that someone could do that... I think I would have been really shaken up if alone!

'Luckily I was with Alice! Had so many messages from other people having experienced the same thing in London.

She added: 'I've heard of men approaching women on the street and hitting them in the face also (a friend of mine had this happen to her). It's completely vile!'

The shocking attack came just after Zara revealed she will spending her Christmas Day away from boyfriend Sam Thompson as she took to Instagram to let her followers know she's heading back to Essex to celebrate.

The former Love Islander wrote: 'Heading back to Essex for Christmas to spend some much needed switch off time with my family. I've been so looking forward to spending Christmas with them.

'I know I'm 28 now and my brother is 24 but we still have the same Christmas traditions we do each Christmas that haven't changed since we were little.'

She added: 'Not ready to give that up just yet (or ever). There's nothing more magical than waking up in your childhood home and having some festive magic with your family.'

Addressing her cats, she quipped: 'Bye bye babies, see you in a few days!! Dad will take good care of you.'

It comes just after Zara stunned wearing the latest collection from her clothing brand Rise last month, which is available to buy now on New Look's website.

Zara modelled the new Rise Black Label range, flashing a hint of her toned, tanned legs in a matching two-piece pyjama set.

She cosied up in the luxury loungewear, later sporting a sweatshirt and relaxed jogging bottoms as well as black leggings, perfect for running errands and fitness classes.

Following the success of her debut collection with Tesco's F&F, Zara has further expanded her brand, introducing elevated ready-to-wear clothing and fashionable staples in an easy-to-match neutral colour palette.

After the showcase, Zara thanked everyone who attended on her Instagram, admitting she always feels nervous before hosting an event.

She said: 'We had a showroom event for Rise and I couldn't be more grateful to everyone who came.

'I cannot thank everyone enough for coming… real talk but I do always get nervous for my own events (even though I've only done three) perhaps it's from when I had a birthday party as a teenager, and everyone pulled out last minute.

'Thankfully, that didn't happen, and I'm so overjoyed beyond words. I've been on cloud nine all day and this space is our new Rise HQ.'
