Gardai have closed a major road in both directions following a serious crash as emergency services race to the scene.

Officers have closed the N17 at Castlegar near Claremorris in Co. Mayo after a crash took place on Tuesday afternoon, March 26.

A photo shows the horrific scene with a large truck jack-knifed by the hard shoulder as debris can be seen strewn across the road.

The crash happened at approximately 2:40pm and the road is expected to remain closed for 'a number of hours' according to gardai.

Local diversions are in place.

In a post on social media, An Garda Siochana released a notice to motorists which read: "Gardaí and other emergency services are currently at the scene of a road traffic collision on the N17 at Castlegar near Claremorris in County Mayo.

"The road in both directions is closed and is expected to remain closed for a number of hours. Local diversions are in place."

An Garda Siochana release statement

An updated statement from An Garda Siochana has confirmed the devastating news of fatalities from the crash.

According to the statement, a woman and two girls have died as a result of the collision.

The statement reads:

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision that occurred shortly before 2pm, this afternoon, Tuesday, 26th March, 2024.

The collision, between a lorry and a car, occurred on the N17 in Castlegar, outside of Claremorris, Co.Mayo.

The driver (female) and two girls who were passengers in the car, were fatally injured.

No other injuries have been reported.

The road remains closed at this time and traffic diversions are in place. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators will conduct an examination of the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Three people dead in N17 crash

Three people have died in a horrific crash on the N17 with the road remaining closed in both directions for several hours.

Officers have sealed the scene at Castlegar near Claremorris in Co. Mayo after the crash involving two vehicles took place on Tuesday afternoon.

It is understood that a car collided with a truck on the road which led to the triple fatality - one woman and two young people.

The crash happened at approximately 2pm and the road is expected to remain closed for 'a number of hours' according to gardai.

Gardai have advised motorists to avoid the N17 north of Claremorris if possible this afternoon.
