Ireland player ratings: Improvements all around as Kenny's men ...
Ireland players, from left, Alan Browne, Evan Ferguson, Liam Scales and Mikey Johnston
Here is how the Boys in Green fared in their 4-0 win over Gibraltar in Euro 2024 qualifying in Faro.
Won’t have an easier 90 minutes than this. Didn’t have a save to make in Faro on a night where he became the youngest Irish goalkeeper to reach 20 caps.
Matt Doherty – 7Two clever forward runs on the right flank saw the Wolves man provide two first-half assists before he nodded in his second Irish goal in the second half. Much improved from Friday.
Shane Duffy – 6As expected, spent most of the evening in the opposition half. Should have bagged a first-half goal at the back post and went close again after the restart.
Liam Scales – 6Like Duffy, was untroubled by opposition who were without a goal in their previous seven games. A quiet shift at left centre-back on his second cap but did what he needed to do when called upon.
Ryan Manning – 6Made his first start since March 2022. Was quiet early on but grew into the game. Set-piece deliveries were good and produced a beautiful flick to beat his man on 72 minutes.
Josh Cullen – 6Some early passes went astray but there was an urgency about the Burnley man’s play which helped kickstart attacking moves and get Ireland going. A good night’s work.
Jason Knight – 7Deployed in a more familiar central midfield role and provided great energy in the Irish engine room. Made several good runs forward and should have converted a header on 50 minutes. Performed his defensive duties with aplomb too.
Chiedozie Ogbene – 7Another energetic shift on the right wing. Played a key pass to Doherty in the lead up to Ireland’s opener and produced a carbon copy for the second. Will be pleased with his display.
Jamie McGrath – 7Made his first start since June’s home clash against Gibraltar and got two assists from his number 10 role. Had some lovely moments, most notably a magic flick to assist Doherty before putting it on a plate for Robinson’s late header.
Mikey Johnston – 7Lively shift from the Celtic winger, who impressed despite his lack of club minutes and picked up RTÉs Player of the Match. First-half effort was well saved before he scored a fortuitous, but deserved goal. Contributed some excellent crosses too.
Evan Ferguson – 6Outran his 40-year-old marker early on to volley home his third Irish goal and settle the nerves before going close to a second. Fired a free-kick well over before making way for Idah.
Stephen Kenny – 7Any dropped points here would have been a disaster and Ireland avoided that comfortably, against a side ranked 143 places below them. But the writing is on the wall for Kenny and that was likely to be his penultimate competitive game in charge.
SubstitutionsAdam Idah for Ferguson 66 mins – 6: Saw a late header easily saved but ran the channels kept busy.
Callum Robinson for Johnston 66 – 7: His late header and first goal in almost two years was awarded after a lengthy VAR check.
Dara O’Shea for Scales 74 – 6: Untroubled at centre-half.
Jayson Molumby for Cullen 74 – 6: Added some energy late on.
Mark Sykes for Ogbene 82 – 6: Not on long enough to rate.
