EVERY year thousands of people from all over the world apply for a dream job as caretaker on Ireland’s Great Blasket Island.

Nestled off the coast of Kerry, the island offers breathtaking scenery and a rich folklore that has produced an impressive array of authors. It’s a magical and mystical place – go there if you haven’t been.

The best legal job in Ireland is not based on the Great Blasket Island, but there are some noteworthy parallels.

You see, the best legal job in Ireland is the Caretaker of Conveyancing (aka Head of Legal Services for Beam) and it’s a crucial role because conveyancing in Ireland hasn’t improved a whole lot since Peig’s time.

When Peig and Pádraig were buying their 50 sq meter cottage for their 11 children, the deeds would have been sent from the Bank of England in London.

Much like today, someone was sent to the bank’s vault to retrieve the deeds and send them on their way.

There was always great fanfare when the deeds arrived on the island by currach after their long journey. Sometimes the package would come with a box of tea and spices from the Orient.

In those days, the King of the Island (An Rí) reviewed the contract and title alone in his cottage. A great hush would descend on the island while the King checked the boundary maps and any evidence of illegal extensions.

As was the custom of the time, white smoke would rise from the King’s chimney once he deemed it was “good marketable title” and a dance would be held in Billy Brennan’s barn.

A lot has changed since Peig bought her gaff. Technologies such as electricity, the light bulb and the automobile were perfected and universally deployed. The first airplane flight occurred in 1903.

The development of the television and computers caused massive changes in the dissemination of information. More recently the internet, smartphones, AI, cloud computing and the advent of blockchain technology have revolutionized the world.

But conveyancing seems to have missed the boat to the mainland, and still takes about 16 weeks with documents and boxes of title deeds crisscrossing the country on trains, vans, boats, and bikes.

About 20km south of the Great Blasket Island lies Valentia Island, where in 1858 an American businessman named Cyrus Field successfully connected North America and Europe by transatlantic cable, a distance of about 3,000km.

.

This was undoubtedly one of the great engineering and technological feats of its time and heralded the dawn of a new era of communications, connecting the old world and the new world in real-time.

Underwater cables still form a large part of the internet’s backbone, carrying the majority of data around the world, with one glaring exception – title deeds!

Conveyancing doesn’t need to take 16 weeks. We reckon it can be done in 4 weeks if we adopt a Cyrus Field mindset. This dream conveyancing job is for an experienced legal professional who wants an exciting challenge.
