Welsh comedian Rhod Gilbert has made his return to TV, after recovering from cancer, and appeared on The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer. While competing in the famous Bake Off tent Rhod said it was "quite emotional" and that he was "lucky to be here".

Rhod was competing against soap star Danny Dyer, comedian Leigh Francis, and presenter Yinka Bokinni to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith. In 2022, the Carmarthenshire-born comedian was diagnosed with a little-known form of head and neck cancer and began treatment.

He has since been given the all-clear, which he described as a "relief". Speaking about his time on Bake Off, Rhod said: "For me, it is quite emotional just to be here because the fact is I am lucky to be here at all. I realised when I got cancer that I had been plodding along through my life thinking 'other people get cancer'."

Rhod added: "One in two of us is going to get some form of cancer in our lifetimes, that is pretty shocking and frightening. Things like this raise money for the research that goes into that treatment and I am living proof I guess, I am literally living proof." He said: "I'm not going to beat around the bush, it is savage. At times you think all we've got, me and my wife, it's just us and this cancer. My social life was gone, my work life has gone, I've got nothing except lying here being ill. I'm just ill. There is nothing else to my life."
