The gap on leaders Shelbourne may be two points fewer now, but as Shamrock Rovers begin their European odyssey next Tuesday they will do so off the back of a hard-fought domestic victory over Dundalk.

The champions are hanging onto their five-in-a-row hopes as they sit 13 points behind Damien Duff’s men (with a game in hand), with Johnny Kenny’s first-half strike proving the difference here in a clash the Hoops were more comfortable in than the scoreline would suggest. Rovers remain in fourth as after back-to-back defeats, they returned to winning ways in front of 5,317 at Tallaght Stadium.
