Labour’s Ireland South Euro Candidate Niamh Hourigan presented the Jim Larkin Thirst for Justice Award to the Palestinian ambassador to Ireland, Dr. Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, at the Labour Party conference in Dublin last weekend.

Niamh Hourigan said,

“The award acknowledges Dr. Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid’s unwavering dedication to her country and her tireless efforts to advocate for justice. It is a profound honour to present the Jim Larkin Thirst for Justice Award to Dr. Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, whose relentless commitment to her people and tireless advocacy for peace exemplify the spirit of this award. Dr. Abdalmajid’s work serves as an inspiration to us all, and her efforts in fostering understanding and solidarity between Palestine and Ireland are commendable.

“The recent resolution passed by the UN Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is a critical step towards ending the violence and suffering endured by innocent civilians. We commend this decisive action and urge all parties involved to adhere to the ceasefire without delay.

“Now more than ever, it is imperative that the European Union leverages its influence to urgently support efforts aimed at achieving a sustainable ceasefire and facilitating the delivery of essential aid to the civilian population of Gaza. The EU must stand firmly in solidarity with the people of Palestine and exert all necessary pressure to bring an end to the violence and alleviate the humanitarian crisis.

“We cannot afford to wait any longer. The time for decisive action is now. I urge leaders at both regional and international levels to prioritise the pursuit of peace and to work tirelessly towards achieving a ceasefire in Gaza. The lives of countless innocent civilians depend on our collective efforts to bring about an end to this senseless violence.”
