It's a cold start to the day with rain, sleet, and in some cases, snow falling all over the county.

A 'Status Yellow' snow and ice warning is in place for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Longford; with various other weather warnings in place for different parts of the country.

Met Éireann has said that sleet and snow could lead to accumulations, most significant on higher ground.

The national weather forecaser is warning of:

• Hazardous travelling conditions

• Poor visibility

• Ice on untreated surfaces

The updated weather warning came into effect at 5am this morning and will remain in place until 8pm this evening.

Any sleet and snow will become confined to Ulster in the afternoon, with patchy rain elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees over the northern half of the country and 5 to 10 degrees further south, in fresh and gusty easterly winds.

Staying cloudy tomorrow with scattered outbreaks of rain and a chance of sleet in Ulster. Turning drier in Munster and south Leinster in the afternoon and evening, with sunny spells and isolated showers developing. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees generally, but milder in the south and southwest with highs of 7 to 10 degrees. Light to moderate variable winds, fresher in the north.
