It's a storm start to the day at the country is under a 'Status Yellow' wind warning.

Met Éireann is warning that Northwest winds will be very strong at times and the warning, which took effect at midnight, will remain in place until 8pm this evening.

People are being advised to look out for debris and loose objects displaced; while driving and cycling conditions will be difficult.

Continuing mild and breezy and mostly cloudy up to Christmas Eve with rain at times. Colder from Christmas day onwards with rain or showers at times.

Today will be very windy with strong to near gale force, gusty west to northwest winds and with gales in northern areas and near coasts. High seas on Atlantic coasts with potential for wave overtopping. It will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees.

Tonight will continue windy and mostly cloudy with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Fresh to strong, gusty west to northwest winds will moderate somewhat towards morning. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees.

Friday will continue mostly cloudy and quite windy with fresh to strong, gusty west to northwest winds and with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. A few brighter intervals also, these most likely in the south and east. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees.

Friday night will be mostly cloudy with some light rain or drizzle at times. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees with moderate to fresh west to southwest winds.

Saturday is expected mild, breezy and mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with moderate to fresh southwest winds. Through Saturday evening and night more persistent rain will spread southeastwards across the country. A mild night with lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds.

Christmas Eve will be mild and mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain, possibly heavy at times. A clearance to cooler, clearer weather will start to extend from the northwest later in the day. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 or 14 degrees with moderate to fresh southwest winds.

Christmas Eve night will bring a mix of clear spells and scattered showers, these mainly in the west and north. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees with moderate to fresh west to southwest winds.

Christmas Day looks like being a cold, bright day with sunshine and showers, heaviest and most frequent in the west and north with a chance of hail. It may become windy in the north towards evening with heavier or prolonged showers and a possibility of thunder. Cooler than previous days with highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees and moderate to fresh, gusty westerly winds, possibly strong in the north later.

Christmas night will be cold with clear spells and a few showers. Frost may develop in places. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees with winds easing.

St Stephen's Day will be dry at first with sunny spells. Later in the day rain will spread from the southwest and will be heavy at times on St Stephen's night. Highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees and winds becoming southeasterly and freshening.

Further outlook: The following few days will be cold and unsettled with spells of rain, showers and strong winds at times. Day time temperatures between about 5 and 9 degrees. Some of the nights will be cold with frost in places.
